Baptism

Baptism is the beginning of the life of faith. Through the waters of Baptism, your child will be "born again". He will be set free from original sin and enter into a new eternal relationship with God the Father, through Jesus Christ our Saviour. He will also become a part of the Roman Catholic Church.

Requirement for Baptism:
Parents of the child to be baptised, must be registered/active parishioners of a church. If you are not registered with Our Lady of Mercy Parish, then a letter from the parish where you are registered is required.
Some couples do not know about this requirement. It is then important that you make an appointment and meet with the Pastor who will put you in the correct direction.
One God mother and one God Father are permitted. One of the God parents must be a practising Catholic.
There are times God parents are from a different country or are unable to attend the instructions conducted by Our Lady of Mercy Church. They should then attend instructions in their respective Churches and bring a letter from the parish priest to say that they did so.

Instructions for Baptism:
It is mandatory that parents and God parents come to the Baptism Instructions, held on the last Thursday of every month at 7pm in the Church.
If you have already had Baptism instructions, you are exempt, and do not need to go through a second round.

Procedure:
The pastor will instruct parents and God parents during the instructions. At this point Fr will also hand out the ‘Baptism Registration Form’ to be duly filled by the parents. The parish office will call you in the next couple of days to confirm the date of Baptism. If you have a date in mind, you can indicate it on the registration form. However, we will comply with your request if we have a spot since baptisms are booked in advance.

Date & Time of Baptism:
Baptism’s at Our Lady of Mercy Church take place on the Second Sunday of every month. Parents & God parents are requested to assemble in the church at 1:45pm.

Church Donation:
It is customary to make an offering to the Church on the occasion of baptism.
